Summit

Purpose

To elevate the afterschool policy conversation in the region by convening community leaders to share knowledge, strategies, ideas and resources for growing systems of afterschool in their communities.

Background

The National League of Cities promotes afterschool as a policy focus for municipal leaders across the country for the last several years, and has partnered with the C.S. Mott Foundation and the Wallace Foundation to award statewide afterschool networks an opportunity to host mayoral summits on afterschool and expanded learning. The Kansas Enrichment Network and the Missouri AfterSchool Network are collaborating to host a bi-state mayoral summit for leaders in both states to come together to learn, network, and act to provide more opportunities for youth in their communities.

Goals

1) Provide a forum for mayors to learn from peers about strengthening local afterschool and summer learning opportunities, creating or expanding partnerships, building citywide afterschool systems, and using afterschool programming to address key challenges in their communities.

2) Establish a group of "Mayoral Champions" to promote afterschool and summer learning statewide.

3) Encourage participants to pass resolutions expressing a commitment to assess afterschool needs and to partner with the Kansas and Missouri statewide networks to expand afterschool opportunities in their communities.
